6 Things to Know Before Booking in Belltown

  • The “Sweet Spot” Location: Belltown is the best location for efficient sightseeing because it sits directly between Pike Place Market and Seattle Center (Space Needle). Staying here means you can walk to both major tourist hubs in 10–15 minutes without needing an Uber or the Monorail.
  • Street Smarts (Avoid 3rd Avenue): Just like downtown, the vibe varies by street. 1st and 2nd Avenues are lively with bars, restaurants, and foot traffic. 4th Avenue is quieter and cleaner. 3rd Avenue is the major bus corridor and often attracts loitering and open drug use. I recommend walking on 2nd or 4th Avenue to get around comfortably.
  • Nightlife & Noise Warning: Belltown is Seattle’s nightlife capital. If you stay on 1st or 2nd Avenue (like at the Ace, Hotel Five, or Belltown Inn), expect street noise late into the night on weekends. If you are a light sleeper, request a high floor, an alley-facing room, or choose a hotel on 4th Avenue (like the Warwick, Andra, or Westin).
  • Airport Transit Strategy: The Westlake Light Rail Station is the transit hub for this neighborhood. It is located at 4th & Pine (the southern edge of Belltown). From the airport, take the train to Westlake ($3). From there, most Belltown hotels are a flat 5 to 10-minute walk (or a cheap Uber ride). Do not get off at Symphony station.
  • The “Cruise” Advantage (Pier 66): If you are sailing on Norwegian or Oceania, Belltown is a convenient place to stay. With light luggage you can walk from your hotel across the Bell Street pedestrian bridge to the cruise terminal — though most will take a taxi for the short trip.
  • Master the Terrain (Flat vs. Steep): Belltown is uniquely laid out. Walking North-South (e.g., from your hotel to Pike Place Market) is mostly flat and easy. However, walking West down to the water involves steep slopes. Just remember: Parallel to the water = Easy. Perpendicular to the water = Workout.

Our room at the 1 Hotel – technically in Belltown, but to me feels more a part of South Lake Union. A great place to stay, regardless.
